Submitting Homework by E-mail
Please follow these instructions
carefully.
Note: I use an automatic
program to sort my incoming e-mail messages. Failure to follow these
instructions will result in your messages being sent to the cyber trashcan
without ever being seen. Messages without a subject will
automatically go to the cyber trashcan.
The Short of It
- Until I have added your name and e-mail
address into my address book, your e-mail messages to me will be deleted
unless you add "Help" to the subject line. The
subject can contain other words, but it must contain "Help" as
well.
- Use your real name for your name, not your e-mail
address. I use this to locate your work. If you have an AOL or
SalukiWebMail mail account, do not submit homework with it unless the
e-mail address contains your name. No
exceptions. When I cannot locate homework, I search for
it using your name. I will not attempt to look up e-mail addresses and
then search again. No name, zero
grade.
-
Submit homework to the appropriate class e-mail address. See the
class web site for this information.
- The subject must clearly state what the message
concerns. If it is homework, use the class number followed by homework
(310 Homework #3). If it is a design submittal, then the class followed
by design (418 Design #2). If you need help, be sure to do two things:
-
Put "help" on the subject
line. Any message with the word help on the subject line will cause an
alert message on my computer when it arrives. If it does not contain
help may not be seen until I grade the next assignment.
- Mail it to my personal account: ray@engr.siu.edu not the class
account.
- Keep a copy of all mail
messages containing class work.
If you do not keep a copy, and I do not receive it, you
have no proof you submitted it.
- Attachments must have the class number, your name or names, and the assignment
number, as 415 Smith & Jones #3.xls.
- If you are submitting homework or designs as a
team, send a copy (cc:) to all team members.
- Keep a backup copy of all work on a separate disk. It will save you a lot of anguish,
explaining, and extra work.
The Details
E-mail Messages
Set up your e-mail program to include the
following with all your messages:
- Your e-mail address
- Your real name
Once this setup is complete, you should not
have to reenter this information each time you send a message. In
addition to the above, you must include an appropriate subject which
includes the class number and one of the following key words if
applicable:
- For homework assignments, the subject line MUST include the
class number and the key word: Homework, e.g. "418
Homework #1" or "411 Homework No. 4." Be sure to write
the words in the order shown. Class number followed by "homework" is
important.
- If you need quick assistance with something related to the
class (e.g. a question about homework, you need a quick
response because the exam is near, or a design question), the subject line
MUST include the course number and the key word: Help,
e.g. "415 Help Homework #4" or "410 Help Homework #7!"
Again, be sure to write it exactly as shown if it relates to a class.
- All other matters about the class, only
the class number and a
general subject.
Why? If it's marked "Class# homework," it goes
into the subdirectory for the class homework. It will be graded as
time permits. If it is marked "help" it will cause an immediate
alert message on my computers at both home and work. The next
time I look at my computer the alert message will be there. Otherwise,
it just goes into the generic class "Inbox" for me to
check when I grade the next assignment. See the message below.

If you are sending a file attachment, the file
name MUST include: the class number, all
or part of your name and the assignment number, if applicable, e.g.
411 Ray
#1.xls, 418 MaryJ Homework #2.xls, 415 Sam HW
#4.doc, or 410 Jamie #3.wk3.
Submitting Homework by E-mail
All homework assignments and designs are to be
submitted by e-mail to the class e-mail address. See the class web for this address. Assignments will not be accepted
in paper form, no exceptions. And, do not do the work on paper,
scan it, and submit it by
e-mail. That will not be accepted.
If you send an attachment such as an MS Excel
spreadsheet or MS Word file, preferably encode the
Failure to send the assignment to the correct e-mail
address, include your name, your
e-mail address, subject and properly name your file attachments will
result in a zero grade for the homework assignment. No
exceptions.
