Message from Department Chair

On behalf of the Faculty, Staff, and Students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) it is my pleasure to welcome you to our homepage. We offer very strong programs in Civil Engineering leading to BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. Our BS in Civil Engineering program is accredited by ABET*. We strive to maintain this honor by always focusing on developing the future; our students.

The Civil Engineering core courses are designed to provide breadth of knowledge about Civil Engineering and technical electives are designed to provide more in-depth understanding of Environmental,  Geotechnical, Structural, Water Resources, and Transportation Engineering, and Surveying.

The department has approximately 250 students and 14 faculty members to facilitate their learning. We have a full-time laboratory supervisor to maintain and upgrade our laboratories and a full-time academic advisor to help students plan their course of study. Our courses are taught by full-time faculty members with assistance from graduate students. Most Civil Engineering class sizes range from 15 to 30 students, thus providing more wholesome learning experience.

We are proud of our facilities and laboratories. It would be my pleasure to give you a personalized tour of our facilities at your convenience. Please call my office to schedule a tour.

Sanjeev Kumar, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow ASCE

Chair, Professor and Distinguished Teacher

Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering is a profession which has contributed enormously to human development and has always faced challenges of the future, i.e., continuously improving the quality of life, advancing civilization, and providing health and safety to the public. According to a report Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for Civil Engineers is expected to grow 18% by the year 2016 compared to 11% growth in overall engineering employment. This is primarily because of the Nation’s need to improve infrastructure and expected growth in population. Our department is uniquely equipped to train Civil Engineers to meet this demand.

 Our Mission

The mission of the Department is to provide educational opportunities that will prepare students for effective and productive careers in the Civil Engineering profession. The profession is characterized by continued professional growth, conduct of research related to the discovery, innovation and development of technologies and methods that improve the practice of Civil Engineering and related areas, and service to the university, community and the profession of Civil Engineering.
