The College of Engineering at Southern Illinois University
Carbondale seeks nominations and applications for the position of Chair of
the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Department Chair
has responsibility for administration of the academic programs and the
effectiveness of the teaching, research and service efforts of the
department. The qualified applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in Civil
Engineering and an earned doctorate in Civil Engineering or a closely
related field. The applicant must have demonstrated excellence in teaching,
research and service consistent with appointment to the rank of Professor
and must possess excellent leadership qualities. The applicant must
demonstrate experience with Civil Engineering Curriculum and a strong
commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. Experience with ABET
accreditation and related assessment is preferred. The candidate must have
professional license in his or her area of practice in the US or its
possessions. The Department Chair must have excellent communication skills
and ability to represent the department within the college, university and
outside constituencies. The Department Chair must have a strong commitment
to cultural diversity and equal opportunity. The department offers BS and
MS degrees in civil and environmental engineering and participates in a
college-wide Ph.D. program in engineering science. The department has 13
faculty members, 230 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students.
Faculty specializes in the areas of environmental engineering, geotechnical
engineering, hydraulic engineering and water resources, structural
engineering, solid mechanics and materials, and land surveying.
