Assistantships
Guidelines for Selecting Teaching
Assistants
Based on the availability
of funds and needs of the department in covering courses, teaching
assistantships will be awarded to students pursuing graduate studies,
i.e., Ph.D. and MS with concentration in Civil and Environmental
Engineering (CEE), under the supervision of CEE faculty members who
have a regular teaching assignment in the department. Assistantships
will be awarded in the following order of preference.
Students currently
in the CEE graduate program who are receiving Teaching Assistantship
from the department based on their performance
Other students
currently in the CEE graduate program based on their performance
MS students in the
CEE department who start Ph.D. in Engineering Science with
concentration in Civil and Environmental Engineering
Other students
admitted to Ph.D. and MS programs with concentration in Civil and
Environmental Engineering. Ph.D. students will be given preference
over the MS students. A priority list will be prepared by the
department Graduate Program Committee based on students’ academic
performance and test scores.
In order to be considered
for a teaching assistantship beyond the first semester, students must
have selected a thesis or dissertation advisor and completed a
tentative Program of Study by the end of the first semester. It is
important to note that students who choose to pursue the non-thesis
option will not be considered for a teaching assistantship.
Using the above
guidelines, the department Graduate Program Committee will prepare a
priority list and advise the Department Chair on awarding teaching
assistantships. The Department Chair will make final appointments
based on the availability of funds and department needs.
A list of the teaching
assistantships traditionally awarded to conduct CEE laboratory
sessions each semester is available here.
Additional teaching assistantships may be awarded to assist with the
grading of various courses. To be considered for a teaching
assistantship, each student must complete the Application for Graduate Assistantship prior to each semester (first
Monday of October for Spring semester, first Monday of March for
Summer semester, and first Monday of April for Fall semester).
Since the selection process can be very competitive, please include a
brief statement of your reasons for requesting an assistantship, as
well as your specific skills/knowledge that may make you an ideal
candidate for a specific position.
Guidelines for Selecting Research
Assistants
Research assistants are selected by the
CEE Faculty based on their research and scholarly work needs and
availability of funds from their grants.
