Due date: Friday April 20th

The City of Spunkindale is planning a new water treatment plant. There are two possible water sources, Spunkin aquifer and flatbed aquifer. The only known problem with either water source is hardness. Estimate the chemicals required and the sludge production per million gallons of water for softening both of the source waters. Which water will create the greatest sludge mass? Which water will require the greatest amount of chemicals? Recent water reports are shown below.

A spreadsheet is provided for you to complete your calculations. Use only this spreadsheet.

Spunkin Aquifer:

Parameter Concentration, mg/L as CaCO3
Calcium 295
Magnesium 25
Alkalinity 300
Nitrate 1
Sulfate 14
Chloride 44
Sodium 19
Potassium 4
Iron 0.3
Dissolved oxygen, mg/L as O2 2.4
pH 8.1
Temperature, °C 21

Flatbed Aquifer:

Parameter Concentration, mg/L as CaCO3
Calcium 215
Magnesium 95
Alkalinity 115
Nitrate 1
Sulfate 9
Chloride 42
Sodium 24
Potassium 3
Iron 0.02
Dissolved oxygen, mg/L as O2 2.0
pH 7.2
Temperature, °C 19
